The PLA Dunajské luhy with abundant occurrence of waterfowl is among the very recently designated PLAs in Slovakia. The Protected landscape area Dunajské luhy is situated in the southern part of the river island Žitný ostrov next to the old riverbed of the Danube.
- Employees of the administration of the PLA care after precious alluvial forests around the river Danube on an area 12,285 ha since 1998. Its administration seats in Dunajská Streda.
- The PLA consists of five independent parts. The first two parts are on the territory of the Capital Bratislava; the third part is squeezed between the old riverbed of Danube and the feeding canals of the Gabčíkovo dam. The fourth part includes the dead arm of Čičov and the fifth is in fact the island Veľkolélsky ostrov. The protected landscape area Dunajské luhy is an important waterfowl biotope. Rare bird species regularly occur here and it is the reason why the PLA is included among the important bird territories of the IBA.
